Tour Plan
We will begin our journey from the hotels in Kuşadası at 8:00 am, with a pickup at 8:30 am in Selçuk. Here, we will meet our professional guide before setting off for Pamukkale. The drive will take approximately three hours, including a brief stop for restrooms and a smoke break of about 10-15 minutes.
Pamukkale, along with the ancient city of Hierapolis, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its stunning natural hot springs believed to have healing properties. The unique travertine terraces were formed through a complex chemical process, where calcium-rich waters bubble up from the ground at a temperature of 35.6 degrees Celsius. As the water reaches the surface, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide evaporate, leading to the precipitation of calcium carbonate that creates the iconic terraces.
Hierapolis has a rich history, having served as a settlement for various cults and cultures. Founded by Eumenes II, the Attalid king of Pergamon, in the late 2nd century BC, it was named after Hiera, the beautiful wife of Telephos, the legendary founder of Pergamon. However, ancient historians such as Strabo and Ptolemy describe Hierapolis as originally being a Phrygian settlement. The city played a significant role in the spread of Christianity in Anatolia, with Philip, one of Jesus Christ's twelve apostles, believed to have died here, elevating Hierapolis to a prominent religious center by the 4th century AD. It eventually became part of the Roman Empire in 395 AD and was designated as a metropolitan bishopric.
During our tour of Hierapolis, we will explore the Necropolis, Domitian Gate, Frontinus Street, the Agora, North Byzantine Gate, Gymnasium, Fountain with Triton, Apollo Temple, the Martyrium of St. Philip, the Column Church, the ruins of the Basilica, Plutonium, Latrina, and the Roman Baths. Our guide will provide insights about Pamukkale, and this portion of the tour will last around an hour and a half. Afterward, you'll have free time to explore on your own. If you wish to swim in the famous Cleopatra Pool, please bring your swimwear; note that there is an additional entrance fee of 250 lira, which is not included in the tour package.
Following our exploration of Hierapolis and the travertines, we will transfer you back to your hotel in Selçuk or Kuşadası by approximately 7:30 pm.
